As Faith and Wesley so eloquently put it, today we celebrate a holiday that is “out of this world.” It’s International Astronomy Day! You might wonder why we should bother to look up to the skies at the stars. Well let me tell you, the heaven’s really do declare the glory of God. The universe is so vast, complex, and beautiful that as Christians we can’t help but be amazed by the God who Created it. Seriously, take some time to google a few photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope or check out this video of Pastor Louie Giglio talking about how incredibly large and amazing the universe is- and consequently how its Creator is even larger and more amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRiIWL04po8
So that’s why we talked about International Astronomy Day on the show today- because we really can worship God in learning about space. As part of our conversation today Faith shared how her Dad named a star after her Mom. Definitely a sweet gesture and you can do it too! Just promise me you’ll pick a better name than “WOH G64” or “HR 5171 A.” Seriously, in an attempt to be orderly science sacrificed creativity and being interesting.
As you look to celebrate this International Astronomy Day, I recommend reading Psalm 8. It says “When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” The universe really is incredibly humbling for us as humans, but despite our insignificance in the cosmos, God still cares about each of us on an extremely intimate and personal level. Happy International Astronomy Day!
