Studies show that when it comes to making decisions to improve your health, Monday is the day most people make those decisions. The Knox County Health Department and Get Healthy Knox County want you to think of every Monday as an opportunity to do something to improve your health – Make that decision to lose a few pounds, get exercising, make a doctor’s appointment, stop smoking – Make every Monday the day to start getting healthy.
Last week we talked about knowing your health numbers – like your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and body mass index (BMI).
One way to keep those numbers where they need to be, is to adopt these numbers – 5-2-1-0. We have talked about 5-2-1-0 and hopefully you’ve heard about them from other places like the YMCA and United Way. 5-2-1-0 refers to a specific formula adopted by the medical community as well as educators, that, when followed daily, leads to a healthier lifestyle. The daily formula is this: 5 servings of fruits and vegetables; 2 hours or less of screen time (TV and video games), 1 hour of physical activity and 0 sugary drinks (pop or energy drinks).
Now, if that sounds like a lot to do at once – don’t feel let that stop you from doing something. You can start with doing just one.
At yesterday’s Earth Day Festival in Gambier, at the Get Healthy Knox County booth, attendees were asked “How will you use 5-2-1-0 to get healthy.” Adults and kids then had the opportunity to pledge support to one of the areas of 5-2-1-0 by writing it down on a sticky note and placing it under one of the numbers.
What would you like to do to live healthier: eat more fruits and vegetables – start by just adding one a day ; spend less time sitting and watching TV; take a walk around the block or join a gym; or cut down on those sugary drinks.
Whatever you decide, do it today, it’s Get Healthy Monday. Good health starts with the decision to get started.
